Eid treats for the neighbours
Alhamdulillah, we were able to make our neighbors a little box of homemade sugar cookies for Eid Al-fitr. This time we were able to get to 10 of our neighbors instead of just six.
The note we included, which was written by Maha, is included below:

Dear Neighbors,
We wanted to share with you the very happy occasion of Eid Al-Fitr, one of two major holidays in Islam. Eid Al-Fitr is an occasion of gratitude and giving, when Muslims give thanks to God for His blessings and bid farewell to Ramadan, the month-long vigil of fasting, charity, prayer, and self-development. On the occasion of Eid Muslims renew ties with friends and family, share foods and treats with others, give in charity, wear their best clothes, and come together to pray and celebrate! Based on the lunar calendar, Eid Al-Fitr this year falls on Friday, September 10, 2010.
We hope you enjoy this simple homemade treat.

The recipe we got from Allrecipes.com was delicious, except it was too soft to cut into shapes although I left the dough in the fridge overnight. We ended up making the dough into balls and flattening them with the bottom of a cup!

Ramadan Gift for Our Neighbours
Alhamdulillah this year we were able to visit some of our neighbors and offer them some Dates for Ramadan as well as a simple note explaining what the month is to Muslims. The note was initially written by a friend, I only made minor additions. This is what it read (we printed on cards):

Dear Neighbors,
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It is the month of fasting, in which participating Muslims do not eat or drink anything from dawn until sunset.
Fasting is meant to teach the person patience, sacrifice and humility. Ramadan is a time to fast for the sake of God, and to offer more prayer than usual. During Ramadan Muslims ask forgiveness for past sins, pray for guidance into the future, ask for help in refraining from everyday evils and try to purify themselves through self-restraint and good deeds. It is a time when Muslims are more keenly aware of those in need - those who are forced to "fast" year-round.
Ramadan is also the month in which God, through the archangel Gabriel, revealed the Holy Qur'an to the Prophet Muhammad.
This year, Ramadan will begin on Wednesday, August 11th and will conclude on Thursday, September 9th. The day which follows, the 10th of September, will be Eid—one of two major holidays for Muslims.

Alhamdulillah, the kids really enjoyed making these gifts--they also really enjoyed going door-to-door handing them out. Actually, at first, Nusayba thought we were going to give these packages to our neighbors so they'd learn about Ramadan and join us in the fast! I sometimes wish it was that easy :)

We're hoping to do something similar for Eid--this time with sweets insha'a Allah!

Summer Library Programs
I have another set of pictures that i'm planning to download from a backup CD so stay tuned, their older than these ones here.
I'm realizing now that I owe Abdu a post all to himself insha'a Allah--maybe I'll do a photo shoot :) For these library events, he was tide down to his stroller for the snow day event and running around when the kids were with the snakes--so i didn't get any shots of him :|
Snow Day--Exploring artificial snow. The girls had a blast since they've never actually seen snow (I can't believe they're half Canadian!). They got to see the artificial snow under a microscope and then add water to it and watch it become snow. They added salt to witness how it melts and took some home to do all over again. It was fun!
For Goodness Snakes--Reptiles at the library. We really had a blast here. Both the snow day and the Snakes show were on the same day at two different libraries 3 hours apart. I was crazy to do both on the same day (and go home, feed the kids lunch and get Abdu to nap in between), but it was well worth it!

I'm so proud of Asmaa. She is slowly overcoming her bug and animal fear walhamdulillah. She actually put a snake around her neck, but wouldn't keep it on long enough for me to get a shot. Next time insha'a Allah :)
I would like to say "like mother, like daughter", but Nusayba actually put three different snakes around her neck before I put one around mine!
We actually have a couple of videos of this wonderful experience, but I haven't uploaded them yet. I'll put them up with the next post insha'a Allah.
